Export of Azerbaijani Gas to Syria via Türkiye Has Commenced
On August 2, 2025, a ceremony was held in Kilis, Türkiye, to mark the launch of Azerbaijani natural gas exports to Syria via Turkish territory.
The event brought together government representatives and senior officials from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Syria, and Qatar.
In his remarks, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of SOCAR’s Supervisory Board, Mikayil Jabbarov, emphasized that the gas exports to Syria had commenced in a short period following the agreements reached during meetings between the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and the President of the Syrian Arab Republic for the transitional period, H.E. Mr. Ahmad Al-Shaar, held on April 11, 2025, in Antalya and July 12, 2025, in Baku. Minister Jabbarov underscored the significance of this development for Syria’s energy security, highlighting that strategic cooperation between the brotherly nations of Azerbaijan and Türkiye, particularly in the energy sector, enabled the swift implementation of this historic project. He also noted that both countries continue to take coordinated steps in support of Syria’s reconstruction and long-term development.
Minister Mikayil Jabbarov stated that the launch of Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Turkish territory represents a major milestone in Azerbaijan’s energy export history, establishing a new corridor linking the South Caucasus with the Middle East. With this development, the number of countries importing Azerbaijani gas has increased to 14. He added that SOCAR plans to expand its global presence further by acquiring shares in overseas gas production projects and supplying its own gas to new markets.
The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SOCAR, highlighting the strategic energy projects implemented by Azerbaijan, stated that these initiatives play an invaluable role in ensuring regional and global energy security. The Minister noted that the launch of the Türkiye–Syria Natural Gas Pipeline and the commencement of gas deliveries from Azerbaijan to Syria once again demonstrate that our country is a reliable and strategic energy supplier. This project will make a significant contribution to the expansion of Azerbaijan’s gas export geography into new directions.
Minister of Energy of Syrian Arab Republic, Mohammad Al-Bashir, emphasized the importance of improving welfare and advancing the reconstruction of Syria, which has suffered from years of war. In this regard, he expressed his gratitude to the governments of Azerbaijan and Türkiye for their support.
The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced the signing of a "swap" agreement with SOCAR for the delivery of Azerbaijani natural gas at the Türkiye–Syria border. He emphasised that Azerbaijan, which has always stood by Türkiye in both sorrowful and joyful times, has once again demonstrated its unwavering support through this project. The Minister stated that Azerbaijani gas would be exported to Syria via Kilis, and that approximately 6 million cubic metres of natural gas per day would be transported through the "Yavuzlu Measurement" Station.
Bayraktar noted that with the export of gas to Syria, local power plants would be able to resume operations in the near future. In the initial phase, up to 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year could be supplied to Syria. This volume of gas will enable the activation of approximately 1,200 megawatts of installed power capacity. The project is expected to make a significant contribution to the normalisation of life in Syria, improve living standards, and accelerate the process of return for displaced populations.
During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation also held bilateral meetings with Turkish and Syrian officials. The discussions focused on opportunities to deepen energy cooperation and included an exchange of views on topics of mutual interest.
