Nowadays, organizations utilize various techniques to enhance their business operations and promote employee involvement. Among these methods is the DEI strategy, which companies employ to establish an all-embracing work environment. This strategy derives its name from the initial letters of three terms: diversity, equity, and inclusion, and its objectives are identified, managed, and executed through it. As a result, businesses can foster a work atmosphere that promotes a sense of belonging and raises productivity. Consequently, what advantages can the DEI strategy offer organizations, and what measures must be implemented to create an inclusive work environment? Let's investigate these together.

An inclusive work environment ensures that individuals feel at ease and receive support while expressing ideas without constraint and acknowledging employee abilities and contributions. Below are several methods that aid in establishing an inclusive work atmosphere through the DEI strategy:

Diversity

When recruiting new employees, businesses need to take diversity into account. By hiring individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, gender, and age groups, organizations can benefit from various perspectives within the team.

Equity

The objective of the DEI strategy is to establish a workplace where every employee is treated equitably, ensuring that everyone has access to equal opportunities and that any form of discrimination in the workplace is not accepted. The approach intends to construct a work environment that fosters equal treatment and non-discriminatory practices.

Inclusion

An inclusive workplace is where employees from diverse cultural, ethnic, gender, and age backgrounds are embraced and granted equal opportunities. To create such an environment, managers must recognize, endorse, and appreciate the unique attributes of their workforce, thereby allowing the development of a culture of diversity and fostering positive relationships in the workplace.

Open Communication

Enabling all employees to express their ideas without discrimination is vital to creating an inclusive workplace. An atmosphere that fosters open communication encourages mutual comprehension among colleagues who feel valued and heard, thus facilitating cooperation between individuals with diverse viewpoints. Additionally, open communication promotes the understanding and acceptance of differences.

Education

Educating employees on principles like diversity, equality, and inclusivity that are part of the DEI strategy helps them adjust to creating an inclusive work environment. This training also assists the company in developing an inclusive workplace and making it easier for employees to adhere to these principles.

Our goal is to promote a culture of acceptance and recognize that each colleague's unique colors, preferences, thoughts, abilities, and beliefs will contribute to our success. By implementing policies based on diversity and inclusion through our "Our Energy is Diversity" initiative and "Women's Empowerment Principles," we strive to create a more equal, fair, transparent, and collaborative work environment by involving our employees.

In our "Our Energy is Diversity" initiative, we are guided by the Women's Empowerment Principles, of which SOCAR Türkiye is a signatory, prepared by the United Nations. We continuously enhance our work environment by developing all our practices for female and male colleagues.

Under the initiative, we support our employees on their developmental journey through various training programs such as Diversity in Recruitment, Inter-generational Communication, Leading a Team with Different Generations, Fighting Prejudices within the Organization, Being Open to Diversity, and Actively Promoting Diversity in Participation.

To create a more favorable work environment for our employees, we have implemented the necessary measures. Our new mothers are entitled to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave, and our new fathers can take 10 days of paternity leave. Along with our yearly back-to-school support for colleagues with school-aged children, we provide monthly childcare support for female colleagues. Additionally, we offer female colleagues an extra day of paid leave per month to use during their menstrual cycle. Our leave policies have expanded for colleagues who adopt or become foster parents. Female colleagues who adopt or become foster parents to children under 3 can take 20 weeks of leave, while male colleagues can take 10 days.

Our goal is to promote gender equality and women's freedom rights in both the business world and all sectors of society. We are working to increase women's employment in all fields through our equality policy, which is essential to our HR policies. We have identified short, medium, and ong-term steps to take and are acting for the short-term measures.

We host inclusive awareness events for all our stakeholders and develop communication strategies for both internal and external purposes. Our organization produces guidelines and manuals on using equitable language within the company to promote a shift from traditional roles. We prioritize the importance of both visual and linguistic representation for a more comprehensive approach. To eliminate prejudicial attitudes in our product and service marketing campaigns, we created a "Language Equality Guide" and shared it with all our stakeholders.

As a leading company in the energy sector, we have released the "SOCAR Türkiye Human Rights Policy and Guiding Principles" and "SOCAR Türkiye Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Policy" within the framework of our "Our Energy is Diversity" initiative. Our goal is to create a more comfortable and productive work environment for all our colleagues, and we will continue to develop practices that support this objective.
